Jennings helps Bucks beat Warriors

Basketball Betting Lines

01/16/2010 - Oakland, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brandon Jennings notched 25 points, including a big three-pointer with 18.9 seconds to play, as the Milwaukee Bucks took a 113-104 win over the Golden State Warriors.

Andrew Bogut had 15 points, 16 rebounds and five assists, while Luke Ridnour added 15 points and eight assists for the Bucks, who snapped a three-game slide.

Monta Ellis had 33 points and eight assists, and Corey Maggette added 32 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Warriors, who have dropped their past three games.

Golden State had to invoke the little used "four-player rule" at the end of the game. Dressing just eight players to start, the Warriors lost Anthony Morrow to a knee injury, while three other players fouled out. Stephen Curry, the last player to foul out, was allowed to return for the last four seconds of the game, although a technical foul was assessed as a penalty.

Milwaukee held a nine-point lead, 99-90, with close to 6 1/2 minutes to play on Ridnour's three-pointer, but Golden State was able to make it a four-point contest on Maggette's layup with five minutes to play.

With Milwaukee maintaining a five-point lead, Maggette drove hard for a layup with 1:04 to play, but, after a Carlos Delfino three-point miss, Jennings came up with the offensive board and buried a three-ball with 18.9 seconds left for a 108-102 lead.

Ellis responded with a jumper, but Ridnour hit two free throws at the other end. Following a Cartier Martin missed three and a foul on Curry, his sixth of the game, Golden State was called for a technical foul in order to get a fifth man on the floor, and Ridnour hit all three of his free throws to seal the win.

Neither team was able to build a substantial lead in the first quarter, but Maggette's jumper in the closing moments of the frame gave Golden State a 23-21 lead heading into the second.

Maggette scored the first seven Warriors points of the second quarter, and Ellis' jumper finished a 9-0 burst that gave the team a 32-22 lead early in the frame.

Golden State led by as many as 13 in the second quarter and took a 56-48 lead into the break.

The Bucks tied the game at 64-all with a little under seven minutes to play in the third, as Ersan Ilyasova hit a pair of free throws, and the team took a 68-66 lead a bit later on a Jennings jumper.

Golden State later surged back with a 7-0 run, but Milwaukee closed the third with the final eight points to take an 84-79 lead into the final 12 minutes.

What Is the Point Spread?

What are Sports Betting Point Spreads?

In any football or basketball game (the main sports that use point spreads) there are two teams playing against each other.

Those teams, though, are rarely exactly evenly matched – meaning that typically one team has a better chance than the other to win the game. If bettors were allowed to bet on who was simply going to win the game, smart ones would obviously bet on the better team (likely winning more than 50% of the time in the process).

If winning were that easy the Las Vegas and online sportsbooks would stop taking any bets! This is where the point spread comes in: the basic function of the point spread is to balance the likelihood of each team “winning” by adjusting the final score by the point spread. After this adjustment is made you get the Against The Spread result (ATS result for short).

Let’s look at Super Bowl XXXIX, New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Most people believed the defending champ Patriots to be the better team – so if betting were simply based upon which team would win the game, an uneven majority of people would have wagered on New England. But, by using the point spread, the bookmakers adjusted the terms of the bet, evening the proposition so about half the people believed the Pats to be the smart bet, while the other half considered Philly to be the smart bet.

How to Read Point Spreads

New England Patriots -7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The better team, called the Favorite, is expected to win the game and must “give” or “lay” points to the weaker team. The favorite is listed with a minus sign and the number of points they are favored by (e.g., New England -7)

In the case of our example, New England must not only win the game, but they must win by more than 7 points for Pats bettors to have a winning ATS result. An Eagles bettor wins his bet either if:

  • Philly wins the actual game by any amount of points
    OR
  • Philly loses the game by less than 7 points.
  • There was also the possibility that the final score could land exactly on the spread number (for example, the Pats winning 28-21 when -7), which is called a “push” or “no action” and a refund is then issued to bettors of both teams.

The same game with the same point spread can be considered from the weaker team’s perspective: The Underdog (Philly in the case of our example) is not expected to win the game and online football betting thus receives or “gets” points given by the stronger team. When a game is stated from the underdog’s perspective the team is listed with a plus sign and the number of points they are underdogs by:

Philadelphia Eagles +7 vs. New England Patriots

Keep in mind that Philadelphia +7 and New England -7 is the same point spread on the same game, simply stated differently. The first is from the underdog’s perspective; the later is from the favorite’s.

For Those Who Like to Consider Things Mathematically

Not a must, but for some a mathematical approach is insightful. You can determine the ATS winner by either:

  • Subtracting the point spread from the favorite’s score (thus the minus sign before the number) and then compare to the underdog’s score
    OR
  • Adding the point spread to the underdog’s score (thus the plus sign before the number) and then compare to the favorite’s score

Who Really “Won” the Super Bowl odds ?

Let’s look at the actual result of Super Bowl XXXIX: New England 24 Philadelphia 21

The favorite, New England, won the game but not by more than the point spread they were favored by (7), so the ATS result was a LOSS for Pats bettors.

Looking at it from the underdog’s perspective, Philly did not win the game, but they lost by less than the point spread (7), so the ATS result was a WIN for Eagle bettors.

Mathematically considered, 24 for the favorite Pats minus 7 equals 17, which is less than the 20 the Eagles scored, so the underdog Eagles win the ATS result (or you could figure 20 plus 7 equals 27 for the Eagles, which is more than 24 for the Pats).

Emily’s boyfriend understood the point spread and wagered $100 on the Eagles at +7. The Eagles may not have gotten a Super Bowl ring, but since they won the ATS result Emily’s boyfriend cashed his bet – giving him money to take her out to a nice dinner.

And now hopefully you understand how to read point spreads, putting you one step closer to joining the fun of sports betting.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
