N.C. State football legend Byrd diesNCAA Football Betting Lines07/23/2010 - Raleigh, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - North Carolina State football legend Dennis Byrd, who was recently selected to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December, has died at the age of 63. Byrd suffered a heart attack last week while undergoing back surgery, and never regained consciousness. Byrd, a defensive tackle, was the first two-time All-America selection in N.C. State football history, and the only Wolfpack defensive player to have his jersey (No. 77) retired. A member of the famed "White Shoes" defense under coach Earle Edwards, Byrd was a three-time All-ACC selection and helped N.C. State to a share of the 1965 ACC championship. He was a consensus All-America selection in 1966 and 1967. In his senior season, Byrd suffered a knee injury that limited his professional career to two seasons. Byrd went on to spend 30 years as a high school teacher and football coach, retiring in 2004. Byrd is survived by his wife, Kim, and four children.
